Choosing a PPF brand is one of the most important decisions in the paint protection process — right alongside choosing your installer. The film sits on your car for 7 to 10 years, so the brand's durability, warranty, and aesthetic qualities matter enormously. But with aggressive marketing from every manufacturer, it is hard to separate genuine performance differences from advertising noise.
We have installed thousands of square feet of PPF from every major brand at our paint protection film service. This guide reflects our hands-on experience with each product, not just spec sheet comparisons. We will cover STEK, XPEL, 3M, and SunTek — the four brands that dominate the professional installation market in 2026.
STEK DYNOshield — Our Primary Film
STEK is a South Korean manufacturer that has rapidly gained market share in the professional PPF space. Their DYNOshield product line is what we use as our primary film at CreaTint LA, and here is why.
Self-Healing Performance
STEK's top-coat self-healing technology is among the best in the industry. Light scratches and swirl marks disappear within minutes when exposed to heat — whether from sunlight, warm water, or a heat gun. In the LA climate, minor scratches from daily use essentially heal themselves as the car sits in the sun. The self-healing layer is integrated into the film's top coat, not applied as a separate layer, which makes it more durable and consistent.
Clarity and Finish
DYNOshield has excellent optical clarity with minimal orange peel (the textured appearance that lower-quality films can show on close inspection). When applied to a properly corrected paint surface, STEK film is virtually invisible. Their gloss finish maintains the factory paint appearance without adding artificial shine.
Finish Options
This is where STEK really stands out. Their DYNOmatte and DYNOsatin finishes are some of the best in the business. DYNOmatte converts any gloss paint to a factory-look matte finish while providing full chip and scratch protection. DYNOsatin provides a brushed, satin appearance. These specialty finishes have exploded in popularity in Los Angeles, especially on Tesla Model 3s, BMW M series, and Porsche 911s. The finish is consistent, does not yellow, and maintains its texture for the full warranty period.
Warranty
STEK offers a 10-year manufacturer warranty covering yellowing, cracking, peeling, bubbling, and staining. The warranty is transferable to a new owner, which adds resale value. Warranty claims are handled through certified installers — which brings us to an important point about the certification process.
Pricing Position
STEK falls between 3M and XPEL in pricing, making it an excellent value proposition. You get performance that matches or exceeds XPEL's at a price point 10 to 15 percent lower. For a full front PPF on a sedan, STEK typically runs $3,500 to $4,500 in Los Angeles. For a deeper look at pricing across all coverage levels, check our PPF cost guide for Los Angeles.
XPEL Ultimate Plus — The Industry Standard
XPEL is the brand most people have heard of when they start researching PPF. Based in San Antonio, Texas, XPEL has been in the protection film business since 1997 and has built one of the strongest brand reputations in the industry.
Self-Healing Performance
XPEL Ultimate Plus has strong self-healing capabilities. Their elastomeric polymer top coat recovers from light scratches within about 30 minutes in direct sunlight or immediately with the application of warm water or a heat gun. Performance is comparable to STEK — in blind tests, most people cannot tell the difference in healing speed or completeness between the two brands.
Clarity and Finish
XPEL has historically been the benchmark for optical clarity. Ultimate Plus is highly transparent with minimal distortion. Their quality control is consistent — you get the same film quality regardless of which XPEL-certified installer applies it. The gloss finish is excellent and integrates seamlessly with factory paint.
DAP (Design Access Program)
XPEL's biggest competitive advantage is their proprietary DAP software. This system contains pre-cut patterns for virtually every vehicle on the road, which the installer cuts using a plotter. Pre-cut patterns mean faster installation, less waste, and — most importantly — consistent fit across installations. Edges align precisely to body lines without the variability of hand-cutting. Other brands have similar pattern databases now, but XPEL's is the most extensive and frequently updated.
Finish Options
XPEL offers their Stealth product for a satin/matte finish conversion. It is a well-regarded product, though in our experience STEK's matte options have a slightly more natural, factory-like texture. XPEL Stealth tends to have a bit more sheen than a true matte, landing closer to a satin finish. For customers who want that specific look, it is an excellent product.
Warranty
XPEL offers a 10-year warranty with terms similar to STEK — covering yellowing, cracking, peeling, and staining. The warranty is transferable and handled through certified installers. XPEL's warranty department has a good reputation for honoring claims promptly.
Pricing Position
XPEL is at the premium end of the pricing spectrum. A full front installation with XPEL Ultimate Plus typically runs 10 to 20 percent more than STEK or 3M. For a sedan full front, expect $4,000 to $5,000+ in Los Angeles. The premium reflects the brand's market position and the DAP software investment that certified shops must make.
3M Pro Series — The Established Name
3M is one of the oldest names in window film and paint protection. Their Scotchgard brand PPF has been around in various forms since the early 2000s, and they continue to innovate with their Pro Series line.
Self-Healing Performance
3M Pro Series includes self-healing capabilities, though in our hands-on testing, the healing speed and completeness lag slightly behind STEK and XPEL. Light scratches do heal with heat exposure, but deeper scratches that STEK or XPEL would recover from may remain partially visible with 3M film. The difference is marginal — we are talking about scratches that most people would not notice — but it exists.
Clarity and Finish
3M film has good optical clarity but tends to show slightly more orange peel texture than STEK or XPEL, particularly on flat panels like hoods and roofs. On curved surfaces (bumpers, fenders), the difference is less noticeable. The film's gloss level is good and matches most factory paint well.
Brand Trust
3M's greatest asset is brand recognition. Almost everyone has heard of 3M, and many customers feel comfortable knowing a Fortune 500 company is behind their product warranty. That brand trust has real value — 3M is not going anywhere, and their warranty will be honored for the full term.
Warranty
3M offers varying warranty terms depending on the product line. Their Pro Series carries a 7 to 10 year warranty (depending on the specific product). The Scotchgard line has traditionally offered shorter terms. Always confirm the exact warranty length for the specific film being installed — not all 3M PPF products are equal.
Pricing Position
3M is typically the most affordable of the four major brands. A full front installation runs $3,000 to $4,000 for a sedan in Los Angeles. This makes 3M an attractive choice for customers who want name-brand protection at the most accessible price point.
SunTek Ultra — The Dark Horse
SunTek, manufactured by Eastman Chemical Company (who also owns LLumar), is a strong contender that often gets overlooked in the STEK-vs-XPEL conversation. Their Ultra PPF line deserves serious consideration.
Self-Healing Performance
SunTek Ultra has solid self-healing properties. Their patented top coat heals light scratches effectively with heat exposure, performing comparably to 3M and only slightly behind STEK and XPEL. For everyday surface-level scratches, the healing is sufficient and consistent.
Clarity and Finish
SunTek Ultra has improved significantly in recent years. Current production runs show excellent clarity with minimal orange peel. The film stretches well during installation, which helps it conform to complex curves without stress marks or clouding. Installers generally report that SunTek is pleasant to work with from a handling and application standpoint.
Hydrophobic Top Coat
One of SunTek Ultra's distinguishing features is their hydrophobic top coat, which causes water to bead and sheet off the surface. This makes the car easier to wash and keeps the film looking cleaner between washes. While other brands also offer hydrophobic properties, SunTek's implementation is consistently effective.
Warranty
SunTek offers a 10-year warranty on their Ultra line. The warranty covers yellowing, staining, cracking, and peeling. As with all PPF warranties, it must be registered through an authorized installer.
Pricing Position
SunTek pricing is competitive with 3M, falling in the accessible range. A full front sedan installation in Los Angeles typically runs $3,000 to $4,200. For customers who want strong performance without the XPEL premium, SunTek is a smart choice.

Why CreaTint LA Uses STEK as Our Primary Film
After working with every major brand, we chose STEK as our primary PPF for three reasons:
1. Best value at the performance tier we demand. STEK DYNOshield matches XPEL Ultimate Plus in self-healing, clarity, and durability — but costs 10 to 15 percent less. We pass that savings directly to our customers. Performance should not require a premium-brand markup.
2. Superior matte and satin finishes. Los Angeles has one of the highest demand rates for matte PPF in the country. STEK's DYNOmatte produces the most authentic factory-matte look we have seen from any brand. For the significant number of customers who want a finish transformation alongside protection, STEK is the clear choice.
3. Excellent installer support and training. STEK invests heavily in installer certification and ongoing training. Their technical support team is responsive and knowledgeable. When we encounter an unusual vehicle or a unique installation challenge, STEK provides real support — not just a phone tree.
That said, we install other brands on request. If you have a specific preference for XPEL, 3M, or SunTek, we will source and install it. The most important thing is that you get a quality film installed by a trained professional — the brand matters, but it matters less than the installer's skill.
Why the Installer Matters More Than the Brand
Here is the truth that PPF brand marketing does not want you to hear: a skilled installer with mid-tier film will produce a better result than an inexperienced installer with the best film in the world. The installation skill determines edge alignment, bubble-free application, seam placement, and how the film handles complex curves.
When evaluating a PPF shop, ask these questions:
- Are you certified by the film manufacturer? Certified installers have completed brand-specific training and must meet quality standards to maintain their certification. This also determines whether you can make warranty claims.
- How many cars have you wrapped? Experience matters enormously. An installer who has done 500+ full fronts will handle difficult panels with confidence that a newer installer cannot match.
- Can I see recent work? Ask for photos of completed installations on vehicles similar to yours. Look for clean edges, invisible seams, and no visible defects.
- What is your workspace like? PPF installation requires a clean, controlled environment. Dust, temperature, and humidity all affect adhesion. A dedicated clean room with climate control produces superior results compared to an open shop bay.
- Do you use pre-cut patterns or hand-cut? Pre-cut patterns from DAP, DYNOprep, or similar systems provide more consistent coverage and cleaner edge lines. Hand-cutting has its place on unusual vehicles, but pre-cut patterns are preferred for standard installations.
The combination of a quality brand and a skilled installer is what produces a PPF installation that looks flawless, lasts a decade, and protects your paint exactly as intended. Do not compromise on either one.
